Introduction to Coppicing is a one-day, hands-on, practical workshop in the woods to begin learning the fundamentals of coppicing. We will work as a team across an area of Park Coppice, learning how to coppice hardwood species such as hazel, sweet chestnut and alder. Not only will you be learning coppicing techniques, but you will also be helping to restore the trees to a productive rotation.
Once some raw product has been produced, we’ll go on to creating some coppice products such as bean poles, pea sticks and hedge stakes. This will involve a variety of tools and techniques.
Short knowledge breakouts will be interspersed throughout the day, including:
coppicing terms,
the need for coppicing,
the environmental and ecological benefits,
threats to coppiced woodland and measures for mitigation,
health and safety considerations,
marketing and selling your coppiced products.
Introduction to Coppicing runs from 09:00-17:00 with breaks for lunch and drinks along the way. You’ll need to bring a packed lunch and other refreshments, although we can make hot drinks. Basic toiletry facilities and shelter are provided, but you will need to make sure you are dressed appropriately for the weather.
